New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo was counting on bringing Amazon’s new headquarters to New York City as a way to make up for the thousands of residents heading for much friendlier tax environments in Florida and elsewhere around the country. So the Democrat was incensed when Amazon announced this week that they were pulling the plug on their HQ2 plans, but he wasn’t mad at Jeff Bezos and co. He was livid at the New York socialists who made it nearly impossible for Amazon to do business in the Big Apple.
“A small group of politicians put their own narrow political interests above their community — which poll after poll showed overwhelmingly supported bringing Amazon to Long Island City — the state’s economic future and the best interests of the people of this state,” Cuomo said in a statement. “The New York State Senate has done tremendous damage. They should be held accountable for this lost economic opportunity.”
While Cuomo was enraged, the “small group of politicians” he spoke of were more than happy to see Amazon hit the road.
Communist Mayor Bill de Blasio released a statement of his own, blaming Amazon for the collapsed deal.
“You have to be tough to make it in New York City. We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world,” de Blasio said. “Instead of working with the community, Amazon threw away that opportunity. We have the best talent in the world and every day we are growing a stronger and fairer economy for everyone. If Amazon can’t recognize what that’s worth, its competitors will.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, one of the most prominent opponents of the deal, could not of course come up with anything nearly that eloquent to say about it, so she went with, “Anything is possible.”
Well, no – a coherent view of American economic policy coming out of your mouth is certainly not possible, but hey, tell us some more about your ridiculous Green New Deal!
To give you an idea of what kind of economic boom Amazon would have brought to New York: 25,000 new jobs, paying around $25,000 a year; an investment in 8 million square feet of Long Island office space; and tax revenue of more than $10 billion over the next twenty years.
Losing this, in Ocasio-Cortez’s view, is a good thing. Lord help us if this moron ever gets her hands on some real power.
