If you listen to the various leaders in the Democratic Party, you’d think they had no higher priority than safeguarding our democracy from those evil, nasty Russians. Putting aside the fact that Russia never really posed much of a threat to our democracy – the leaking of a few emails and a handful of Facebook ads do not a destroyed democracy make – you have to wonder how much they really care about this supposed cloud looming over the republic. Because, as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell pointed out on the floor Tuesday morning, no one has done more to help the Russians divide our country than the Democrats.
“Remember, Russia set out to sow discord, to create chaos in American politics, and undermine confidence in our democracy,” McConnell said. “But on that front, given the left’s total fixation on delegitimizing the president — the president Americans chose and shooting any messenger who tells them inconvenient truths, I’m afraid the Russians hardly needed to lift a finger.”
It’s “case closed,” said McConnell, and it is time for the Democrats to end their hostile investigations into everything from Trump’s tax returns to what he ate for dinner last night.
The resolution of the Russian conspiracy debacle, McConnell said, “ought to be good news for everyone but my Democratic colleagues who seem to be publicly working through the five stages of grief.”
Proving him correct, McConnell’s counterpart Chuck Schumer took to the floor of the Senate shortly after the speech to declare the case back open.
“This was an astounding bit of whitewashing,” he said. “Not unexpected but entirely unconvincing. It’s sort of like Richard Nixon saying, ‘Let’s move on,’ at the height of the investigation of his wrongdoing. Of course he wants to move on. He wants to cover up. He wants to silence.”
Maybe Schumer missed the memo, but the Mueller investigation is finished. And after spending more than two years and $30 million of taxpayer money, the Greatest Special Counsel on Earth concluded that there was never any collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Oh, we forgot, it’s not about that anymore. Now it’s about Trump’s tax returns and his violations of the Emoluments Clause. It’s about obstructing Mueller by posting mean tweets. It’s about the sinister William Barr and the summary letter that actually got Trump a day or two of good press. It’s about whatever they want it to be about at the time. Democrats are proving what we predicted all along, which was that they never cared a whit about the truth. They only want to win – no matter what it costs the country.
