The Trump administration has been trying to cut off federal grant money going to sanctuary cities that refuse to cooperate with immigration officials, but in the wake of last week’s outrageous verdict in the Kate Steinle murder trial, one Republican congressman wants to go a step further. In a bill introduced to the House on Monday, Rep. Todd Rokita (R-IN) is pushing for a law that would send local politicians to prison if they are convicted of sheltering illegal immigrant criminals from their rightful deportation.
“Politicians don’t get to pick and choose what laws to comply with,” Rokita said in an interview with Fox News. “Americans are dying because politicians sworn to uphold the law refuse to do so.”
In the “Stopping Lawless Actions of Politicians Act,” Rokita aims to hold local lawmakers accountable for their actions. If the bill is passed, state and city-level politicians would be held criminally responsible for their refusal to cooperate with federal immigration officials. The prescribed punishment for an offense: Up to $1 million in fines and up to five years in prison.
“It’s time the federal government gets serious about enforcing immigration laws and holding politicians accountable who conspire to break them,” said Rokita.
Amen to that.
As advocates for tougher immigration enforcement and the abolition of sanctuary cities, we were angered and disturbed by the verdict in the Steinle case. But even if we were gung ho about letting illegals pour into this country the way San Francisco liberals obviously are, we would be distressed about it, because we’re pretty sure this miscarriage of justice is the worst thing to happen to immigration activists since the election of Donald J. Trump. This ridiculous verdict has turned a spotlight once again to the perils of unrestrained illegal immigration and it has shown America exactly what can happen when we don’t defend our borders and we don’t enforce our laws.
In the days following this judicial insanity, San Francisco officials have doubled down on their lawless positions. A spokesman for Mayor Ed Lee said, “San Francisco is and always will be a sanctuary city.”
This defiance has caused the hashtag #BoycottSanFrancisco to go viral on social media as people of conscience and sound mind reject the leftism on display in California.
We doubt there’s much chance of Rep. Rokita’s bill getting through to the president’s desk, but we’re glad to see there are Republicans serious about bringing an end to these sanctuary city policies. These policies have already led directly to bloodshed and crime. They have no place in this country.
