Health Care Public Option Backed by Obama

President Barack Obama renewed his calls for a public option for health care on Monday. The option would allow people to opt for a government-run insurance option that would alleviate many of the issues with Obamacare.

Obama’s stance was written in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

“Congress should revisit a public plan to compete alongside insurers in areas of the country where competition is limited,” penned Obama. Hillary Clinton also backed the call for a public option for insurance days earlier.

The call for a public option has been turned down by Congress numerous times, but it does allow Obama to push the Democratic party to the left. Clinton is also looking to lure in Bernie Sanders’s backers. Sanders’s campaign urged universal health care options that would come directly from taxes.

Obama’s approach to health care is incremental. The article demonstrates that the president believes in a gradual approach to health care before going to a fully government-run system as proposed by Bernie Sanders.

“There are simpler approaches,” stated Obama, “at both ends of the political spectrum: the single-payer model vs. government vouchers for all.”

Obama’s health care vision was originally scheduled to be announced in Florida on Thursday, but the meeting was cancelled due to the recent attacks on Dallas police.
