President Trump has often called CNN’s Don Lemon the dumbest man on television. For our money, that award might fairly be given to the network’s Jim Acosta, who stuns us on a near-weekly basis with his lack of self-awareness and his willingness to pander to the liberal idiots on Twitter. But to be honest, both of them have some pretty fierce competition from their colleague Chris Cillizza, who is known for some of the dumbest, base-level political commentary on the internet today. And if we’re judging purely by each of these morons’ latest screeds, then Cillizza wins the award by a mile.
On Thursday, Cillizza published a ridiculous piece suggesting that if President Donald Trump were to lose in the 2020 election, he would called the results a scam and simply refuse to leave the White House.
Cillizza builds his case with the following three quotes.
The first from Trump: “The Democrats in Congress yesterday were vicious and totally showed their cards for everyone to see. When the Republicans had the Majority they never acted with such hatred and scorn! The Dems are trying to win an election in 2020 that they know they cannot legitimately win!”
The second from Trump’s campaign press secretary Kayleigh McEnany: “These desperate Democrats know they cannot beat President Trump in 2020, so instead they have embarked on a disgraceful witch hunt with one singular aim: topple the will of the American people and seize the power that they have zero chance at winning legitimately.”
The third from White House press secretary Sarah Sanders: “They continue to be a group totally taken by small radical leftist fringe of their party and they’re completely controlled by it, they know that’s not enough to beat this President so they’re going to look for other ways to do that.”
Anyone with even a thimbleful of brain cells could see this for what it is: Trash talk. Trump is bashing the Democrats for their phony-baloney investigations and throwing a very good – and quite true – explanation for why they are behaving that way.
But Cillizza says it means this:
All of that rhetoric fits into a very clear pattern: Convince the Trump base that it is not possible for him to lose a fair and legitimate election in 2020. Thus, if he loses, it must be, by definition, illegitimate.
In politics, Trump’s inability to accept that he could lose fair and square is far, far more dangerous.
Michael Cohen, Trump’s former longtime fixer, said as much during his congressional testimony in front of the House Oversight Committee last month. “Given my experience working for Mr. Trump, I fear that if he loses the election in 2020, that there will never be a peaceful transition of power,” said Cohen.
Sit with that for a minute. And realize what it would mean if the sitting incumbent President of the United States simply refuses to concede he has lost in 2020.
Is Trump talking trash, or is he setting the stage for an unprecedented – likely violent – effort to remain President after being voted out of office?
Well, if we were to give Chris Cillizza the same sort of numbskulled analysis that he gives the President, we’d say there are only two ways you can read his column. Either he is a certified moron playing to a readership that is even dumber than he is…or he’s setting the stage for an absolutely massive amount of voter fraud in the 2020 election. Fraud that Trump will be unable to protest, because he has already been painted as a power-mad dictator.
Sit with that for a minute.
