President Trump warned Friday that the Obama administration officials who authorized the spying that took place during the 2016 election were guilty of serious crimes against the United States. In one of his starkest statements yet about the misdeeds of the Obama intelligence community, Trump said that the responsible officials were guilty of treason.
“My campaign for President was conclusively spied on,” he tweeted. “Nothing like this has ever happened in American politics. A really bad situation. TREASON means long jail sentences, and this was TREASON!”
Democrats and the mainstream media continue to deny that “spying” is the right word for what occurred in 2016, but Attorney General William Barr is on record saying that “spying did occur” during the election. As such, he has appointed the U.S. Attorney from Connecticut to look into questions of whether or not the Obama intelligence agencies had a solid foundation of evidence to authorize those activities. If John Durham finds that the spying was politically motivated in any way, then Trump is absolutely right. That’s a serious crime.
Durham will be examining the origins of the FBI investigation into Trump’s campaign, looking into the use of informants like Stefan Halper and Azra Turk, and poring over the FISA warrants the Bureau secured against Trump campaign associate Carter Page. This investigation will likely involve help from Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz, who is himself only weeks away from delivering his own report about the investigation.
The initial counterintelligence investigation into the Trump/Russia affair was initiated by three FBI officials who have since been fired in disgrace: Special Agent Peter Strzok, Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, and Director James Comey.
But once all of the dirty secrets come to light, these three officials may be pining for the days when a pink slip was the worst thing they got. In the post-Mueller era, we know for a fact that they are all guilty of – at LEAST – gross incompetence. A backwater sheriff’s office would not have chased their tails around on the basis of this ludicrous “evidence.”
Unfortunately for them, their careers do not speak of incompetence. And thus, a darker explanation must be considered. It must be deemed possible, if not probable, that they were on a politically-motivated quest to keep Donald Trump from becoming the 45th President of the United States. By any means necessary. If that meant tracking down phony leads, making connections that didn’t exist, treating DNC research as if it were gospel truth, and spying on American citizens? Well, as long as Clinton wins the election, we’re all clear! We can do whatever we want!
But that didn’t happen, and now the chickens are coming home to roost. Good luck to them all, because they’re damn sure going to need it.
