We’re long past the point of expecting CBS News or any other left-wing media outlet to be tough on Democrats, but the pandering fluff job that was Norah O’Donnell’s interview with Joe Biden on Sunday brought things to a new level. O’Donnell’s embarrassingly softball questions brought shame on the name 60 Minutes and her own reputation as a journalist.
“The Russians are targeting you,” O’Donnell began.
“The Russians don’t want me to be president and Trump doesn’t want me to be the nominee,” Biden replied, easily tapping the ball back across the court.
“But President Trump says Russian interference is a hoax,” O’Donnell said, seemingly “asking questions” written for her by the Biden campaign.
“He’s an idiot — in terms of saying that. Everybody knows this. Everybody knows it. Nobody doubts it,” said Biden.
Not quite sure that Trump has ever dismissed Russia’s election interference as a hoax, by the way. He has characterized the left-wing theory that his campaign colluded with Moscow as a hoax, and the Mueller report essentially backed this up.
But of course, O’Donnell was not conducting this interview to provide viewers with an impartial analysis, much less any deep insight into Joe Biden. She was simply doing her job as an adjunct member of the Democratic Party, bolstering a candidate who needs all the help he can get.
After discussing some Russian Facebook accounts that have been targeting Biden, O’Donnell said (in voiceover), “While Facebook removed the fake Russian accounts, it refused a request by Biden’s campaign to take down political ads paid for by the Trump campaign making claims that Biden says are not true.”
“Facebook is running right now paid advertising by Trump that everybody knows is a flat lie,” Biden said. “You know, I’m glad they brought the Russians down. Why don’t you bring down the lies that Trump is telling and everybody knows are lies?”
Well, if “everybody knows” that Trump is lying, then what difference does it make? But perhaps Biden is actually concerned that there’s more than a nugget of truth in the allegation that he, as vice president, withheld $1 billion from Ukraine unless they dropped an investigation into the company his son worked for.
But if you turned into this interview to see Norah O’Donnell challenge Biden’s story that he and his son are as pure as the driven snow, you made a big mistake.
“Are you concerned that the president, saying this over and over again, his campaign ads saying over and over again, that people will start to believe it? He’s attacking your integrity,” she said.
“Sure he is,” Biden said. “But it’s coming from a man with no integrity so it helps.”
Ho ho ho, ha ha ha. Just a rollicking good time on what was once a respected newsmagazine show.
