The liberal media was aghast this week when former Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North was announced as the new president of the National Rifle Association. Though they would have probably been equally horrified if Hillary Clinton, David Hogg, and Pope Francis had been named co-presidents of the organization, since they will find any excuse to demonize the NRA, we should probably take their united opposition to North as a positive development. A good rule of thumb is that the more the leftwing media hates something, the more likely it is that said “something” is actually worth celebrating. Since the attacks on North have been deafening, we say, hey, break out the champagne!
In an interview with the Washington Times, North said that his job was to grow the NRA’s membership base well beyond its current status. It’s clear from the interview that North is not being brought in to simply oversee what is, by all metrics, already a very successful organization. Rather, he has a vision for the NRA that includes vastly expanding the reach of its efforts.
He is also very much aware of the opposition the NRA is facing in leftwing activism and has a strategy for making sure those forces can never encroach on our constitutional liberties.
“They can do all the cyberwar against us — they’re doing it. They can use the media against us — they are. They’ve gone after our bank accounts, our finances, our donors, and obviously individual members,” North said. “It’s got to stop. And that’s why the leadership invited me to become the next president of the NRA.”
North said the media’s treatment of gun control advocates was an ongoing joke.
“They call them activists,” he told the Washington Times. “That’s what they’re calling themselves. They’re not activists – this is civil terrorism. This is the kind of thing that’s never been seen against a civil rights organization in America.”
At the same time, North isn’t putting his head in the sand. He acknowledged that the teens of Parkland had been highly successful in turning Americans and corporations against guns in recent months and he knows it will take a smart counter-offensive by the NRA to keep the propaganda at bay.
“What they did very successfully with a frontal assault, and now intimidation and harassment and lawbreaking, is they confused the American people,” he said. “Our job is to get the straight story out about what happened there, and to make sure that kind of thing doesn’t happen again because the proper things are being done with the advocacy of the NRA.”
It seemed almost impossible to believe that the anti-gun movement could get worse after the days of Obama, but it’s clear that these leftists are not going to stop in their efforts to destroy the Second Amendment. The NRA is one of our most important bulwarks against the left’s encroaching army, and North sounds like just the man we need at the helm.
