In an interview with CNN this week, political analyst Allan Lichtman, who has correctly predicted the outcomes of the last nine presidential elections, said there was only one thing Democrats could do to prevent Donald Trump from winning a second term.
“It’s a false dichotomy to say Democrats have a choice between doing what is right and what is constitutional and what is politically right,” said the American University professor. “Impeachment is also politically right.”
Lichtman, who has been right on the money for every presidential election dating back to 1984, said that if Democrats do not take the opportunity to impeach Trump, they could be facing a landslide election loss in 2020.
The professor relies on a unique system of 13 “key factors” to determine who is most likely to win the presidency. Those factors include incumbency, economic conditions, foreign policy, and more. According to Lichtman’s system, a party can only lose on six factors before losing the presidency. The Hill reports that Lichtman’s analysis shows that Democrats have some ground to make up if they want to defeat Trump next November:
Lichtman says the Trump administration is down three key factors: Republican losses in the midterms elections, a “lack of foreign policy success” and Trump’s “limited appeal to voters,” CNN reported. Impeachment would trigger a fourth key — scandal over the proceeding’s public nature.
“Let’s not forget, impeachment is not just a vote in the House,” Lichtman said. “It involves public hearings as part of the impeachment inquiry, and, what everyone forgets, a public trial in the Senate in which House prosecutors present evidence, present documents, make opening and closing statements.”
Okay, that’s true. But Mitch McConnell and other top Republicans have already been very clear about how they will treat an impeachment trial in the Senate, and it’s not going to be a pretty picture for Trump-hating Democrats. They are going to have a field day blasting holes in the left’s arguments that Trump is guilty of “high crimes and misdemeanors,” and it will be the easiest thing the GOP has done in years. Why? Because, quite simply, Trump is not guilty of anything that rises to that level. Pelosi knows it. Adam Schiff knows it. Robert Mueller knows it. Hell, anyone who isn’t eaten up with left-wing propaganda knows it. An impeachment trial will ensure that even they know it.
Trump is steamrolling towards a second term in office and there may be nothing, including impeachment, that Democrats can do about it.
