Former First Lady Nancy Reagan Dies of Heart Failure

Nancy Davis Reagan, former actress and widow of former president Ronald Reagan, has died of congestive heart failure. She was 94 years old.

“Mrs. Reagan will be buried at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, next to her husband, Ronald Wilson Reagan,” the Reagan Library announced on Sunday.

Nancy Reagan was born in New York City. She moved to Chicago after her mother married neurosurgeon Dr. Loyal Davis. She went on to become an actress after majoring in theater at Smith College in Massachusetts.

Ronald Reagan and Nancy Davis met as actors. They wed on March 4, 1952.

During her time as a first lady, Nancy Reagan was known for sponsoring a drug prevention campaign targeted at children and young adults. She toured the nation and visited other countries to promote her “Just Say No” anti-drug advocacy.

Following the news of Mrs. Reagan’s passing, statements of sympathy poured in.

“We remain grateful for Nancy Reagan’s life, thankful for her guidance, and prayerful that she and her beloved husband are together again,” President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama said in a statement.

Ex-President George W. Bush said that, during her years in the White House, Mrs. Reagan “raised awareness about drug abuse and breast cancer.” He added that he and his wife Laura “benefited from her work,” when they moved into the White House in 2001, referring to the White House renovations Mrs. Reagan initiated during her time as first lady.

Former President Bill Clinton, who issued a joint statement with wife and presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, described Nancy Reagan’s character as “legendary, particularly when tested by the attempted assassination of the President, and throughout his battle with Alzheimer’s.”

Another former first lady, Barbara Bush, said Mrs. Reagan “was totally devoted to President Reagan, and we take comfort that they will be reunited once more.”
