Bernie Sanders Says Polls Are Underestimating His Support in New York

In an interview with NBC’s “Today,” Bernie Sanders warned his supporters, and naysayers, to be cautious when interpreting recent polls that show him trailing Clinton in New York. Sanders said his campaign has been in this position before.

“Let’s look at the real poll tomorrow,” he said. The senator said that “polling has underestimated” his performance in elections. Sanders pointed to his upset in Michigan, where polls had him trailing by 25 points.

Recent polls show Clinton leading Sanders by 13%, and there is no indication that Sanders is closing the gap.

“We have enthusiasm. We have energy,” Sanders said. “People understand that it’s too late for establishment politics and economics,” he added. Sanders says people “want real change in the country” and a president that will stand up to the “billionaire class.”

Sanders reaffirmed his support for legislation that would allow courts in the U.S. to decide if foreign countries or entities were responsible for the attacks on 9/11, and allow victims of the tragedy to sue the governments of these countries.

The Vermont senator is also calling for the release of the 9/11 Commission Report. Sanders says the Saudi government has been a supporter of Wahhabism, an extreme version of Islam. He called the religion “destructive,” and noted that it’s important for Americans to understand the role the Saudis may have played.

Although Sanders is trailing in public polls, the senator notes, “We have a message that’s resonating all over this country.” Tuesday’s primary will prove whether Sanders’ message is clear.
