The Republican National Committee (RNC) turned down a proposal that would have resulted in dramatic internal rule changes. The proposal was presented by committeeman Solomon Yue of Oregon. Yue argued that the bill provides transparency in the RNC, which has been scrutinized for its procedures.
Members of the RNC remained divided on the matter, with advocates trying to eagerly advance the proposal.
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus was against the bill and believed that passing the legislation would further incite presidential hopeful Donald Trump, who has been on record stating that the system is “rigged.”
Priebus was attacked by members of the RNC over the proposal. Arizona RNC member Bruce Ash talked out against Priebus and accused him of a “breach of trust.” Ash alleges that Priebus worked behind the scenes in an effort to squash the bill and ensure that the bill never made it to the Rules Committee. Ash is the chairman of the Rules Committee.
Opponents of the bill believe that it would have closed the door to drafting a Republican candidate in the event of a deadlocked convention. Rumors have been swirling of a potential candidate that could represent the Republican party in the event that Trump does not secure the required delegate count.
