U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel unsealed documents relating to a lawsuit against Donald Trump and Trump University, a real estate school. Trump recently called the judge a “hater” for a lawsuit backed by thousands of people that allege they were misled by the school’s promises after spending up to $35,000 in some cases to learn Trump’s real estate investment strategies.
“We’re in front of a very hostile judge,” said Trump at a San Diego rally on Friday. “The judge was appointed by Barack Obama,” he said. Trump continued his tirade, adding that he “believes Curiel is a Mexican.”
Trump’s conduct could lead to an indirect criminal contempt of court, states Charles Geyh of Indiana University Maurer School of Law. The judge cannot respond directly to the comments due to not being able to talk about a current court proceeding.
The comments by Trump have hastened against America’s Hispanic community in recent weeks. The Republican presumptive nominee criticized New Mexico’s Governor Susana Martinez for her handling of New Mexico’s economy. Trump, early in his campaign for presidency, proposed building a wall between America and Mexico.
Trump wants to block illegal immigrants from entering the country and has asserted that he will make the Mexican government pay for the wall to be built.
