Trump’s Response to Orlando Massacre Provides Hope to Pro-Gay Rights Republicans

The Orlando massacre on Sunday was quickly followed by a response from Republican Donald Trump. The presumptive Republican nominee backed his support for the LGBT community with a series of tweets from Sunday through Tuesday.

“I will fight for you,” he said following the LGBT community thanking him for his tweet that stated: “Ask yourself, who is really the friend of women and the LGBT community? Donald Trump with his actions, or Hillary Clinton with her words?”

The warmth from Trump was met with praise from the community. “I believe we truly hit a tipping point in the LGBT community,” said Log Cabin Republicans president Greg T. Angelo. “You had Republicans reluctant to even mention the phrase ‘LGBT community,’” he said.

Trump mentioned the community and was sympathetic, which helped him gain favor among LGBT Republican voters.

GOP leaders hope that Trump will be stern with the Republican community that has often refused to acknowledge the LGBT community and the attacks they face. The Republican party calls the attack an attack on America, but the LGBT community believes the attack was an attack on LGBT citizens specifically.

The attack was carried out at a LGBT nightclub in Orlando, Florida, and resulted in 49 deaths and over 50 injuries.
