Bernie Sanders has achieved a few “very important victories” in the Democratic platform draft, but the Vermont senator vows to continue fighting for the inclusion of progressive issues.
Sanders has yet to concede from the race, and plans to continue pressing for policies that were the foundation of his campaign before the 2016 platform is locked in ahead of the Democratic National Convention.
“We’re going to take the fight to Orlando, where the entire committee meets in two weeks,” Sanders said, noting that he lost some very important fights. Sanders says if his campaign does not succeed in Orlando, he will take the issues to the floor at the convention in July.
Sanders has claimed victories on three key issues: $15-an-hour minimum wage, higher taxes on the wealthy, and stricter Wall Street regulations. But the party’s platform is not aligned with Sanders’ and his supporters’ position on carbon tax, trade and a single-payer health insurance system.
“We have more to do,” Sanders said.
The senator recently said that he would support the presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and do all that he can to defeat Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, in the general election. But recent polls show that nearly half of Sanders’ supporters will not vote for Clinton. Sanders said she’ll need to embrace more progressive policy positions if she hopes to win over his supporters.
