Terry McAuliffe, governor of Virginia, says he expects Hillary Clinton to flip-flop on her position on the TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership) deal.
While campaigning, Clinton has been vocal about her opposition to the TPP, a trade deal between 12 nations that was negotiated by the Obama administration. Clinton has said the deal lacks the provisions to keep currency manipulation in check.
In an interview with Politico, McAuliffe said he believes Clinton will reverser her position on the trade deal.
“Once the election’s over, and we sit down on trade, people understand a couple of things we want to fix on it,” he said. “Listen, she was in support of it. There were specific things in it she wanted fixed.”
Donald Trump, Republican nominee, has already taken the opportunity to use the Virginia governor’s remarks to his advantage, stating that “Crooked Hillary” will “betray” voters on the TPP.
John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign chairman, said she is opposed to TPP before and after the election.
Brian Coy, a spokesman for McAuliffe, said he had no “expectation” that Clinton would flip-flop on the issue and has not told him anything to that effect.
During her tenure as secretary of state, Clinton called the TPP the “gold standard” deal. With Bernie Sanders and Trump both opposing the trade deal, Clinton has since switched positions to oppose the deal after it was finalized last year.
