Donald Trump has a lot of answering to do to both parties following comments made about the Khan family. The billionaire and Republican presidential nominee questioned whether Ghazala Khan, mother of US Army Captain Humayun Khan, was “allowed” to speak as her husband, Khizr Khan, spoke at the Democratic National Convention.
Trump spoke about the family on ABC News, stating, “She had nothing to say. She probably… maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”
Hillary Clinton spoke out about the remarks at a church service, asking, “Who would insult people because of their religion, their ethnicity, their disability?”
“It’s just not how I was raised,” she continued.
Paul Ryan, House Speaker and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were careful not to name Trump when they commented on the Khan family. Ryan stated, “Many Muslim Americans have served valiantly in our military, and made the ultimate sacrifice. Captain Khan was one such brave example.” The House Speaker continued, “His sacrifice and that of Khizr and Ghazala Khan should always be honored. Period.”
Ghazala published an opinion piece in the Washington Post on Sunday to state, “Donald Trump said that maybe I wasn’t allowed to say anything. That is not true.” The mother continued, “When Donald Trump is talking about Islam, he is ignorant.”
