Trump proved on Wednesday night that he can still surprise his voters with brash attacks on Clinton. Speaking at a rally in Jackson, Miss., the Republican nominee shouted, “Hillary Clinton is a bigot!” The statement, which was included in the prepared remarks given to reporters, caught many in the crowd off guard.
The Washington Post reported that a woman standing behind Trump “grimaced” at his comment, unsure of whether she should clap.
As the crowd tried to decide how it should react, Trump continued his thoughts. The Republican nominee said Clinton sees “people of color only as votes, not as human beings worthy of a better future.”
Trump told the crowd that Clinton would “do nothing for African Americans” or Hispanics.
“She’s only going to take care of herself, her husband, her consultants, her donors,” Trump continued.
The New York businessman claimed that the Democratic nominee simply did not care about the effects of her policies on the African American and Hispanic communities.
Trump has been actively trying to gain support from black voters in recent weeks. At a rally in Ohio on Monday, the candidate reiterated the same remarks, claiming Clinton only views people of color as votes and not “human beings worthy of a better future.”
