Hackers Breach Election Systems in Illinois and Arizona

Election and law enforcement officials say election systems in Illinois and Arizona have been breached by hackers, according to a report from CNN.

In the state of Illinois, hackers gained access to the Illinois Board of Elections database, with 200,000 personal voter records compromised.

The hack, which was initially reported by Yahoo, occurred in June and was discovered in July. The FBI is now investigating the cyber attack.

Board of Election officials are “confident” that the attackers were unable to change information, but do note that the investigation is still ongoing. It is believed that the hackers were from overseas.

The database in Illinois included the names, addresses, birthdates and sex of voters. In some cases, the information also included the last four digits of the voter’s driver’s license and social security numbers.

The 10-year-old database contained information for 15 million voters.

In Arizona, officials took the voting registration system offline after the FBI alerted the agency that there was a cyber threat to the system.

After taking the registration system offline, it was discovered that an official’s username and password had been posted online. It is believed that the official downloaded a virus that exposed the username and password information.

Matthew Roberts, the Director of Communications for Arizona’s Secretary of State, says there is no evidence that any information has been compromised, and there is no evidence of malware in the database.
