Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Meet Clinton and Trump

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are both scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi at the United Nations General Assembly on Monday. The Trump campaign confirmed the meeting on Sunday.

Clinton announced last week that she will be meeting with the president late on Monday.

This is the second time Trump will be meeting with a foreign president on his campaign trail. He met with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto before giving his speech on illegal immigration. Trump has not held political office previously, and his move to meet with Egypt’s president is seen as a way to boost his foreign policy credentials.

Sisi came into power following a revolution, which led to President Honsi Mubarak being removed from his position. Mohamed Morsi helped the country during its transition prior to Sisi coming to power in 2013.

The meeting with Trump will take center stage on Monday. Trump has called for ramped up support to fight the Islamic State and suggested banning Muslims from entering the United States. A meeting with Sisi has been long awaited by Republicans who suggest the current administration has not done enough to support Egypt in its fight against terrorism.

Clinton will also meet with Ukraine’s President Poroshenko on Monday.
