President Barack Obama lashed out against Trump over his allegations that the U.S. presidential election is rigged against him. Obama’s advice to Trump was to “stop whining and go try to make his case to get votes.”
The president’s remarks came after a recent Trump rally in Colorado where the GOP nominee continued his attack, claiming that the “press has created a rigged system and poisoned the minds of the voters.”
Trump’s attacks on the voting system have intensified after new opinion polls show the GOP nominee trailing behind his opponent Hillary Clinton.
Numerous studies have shown that voter fraud is rare in U.S. elections, according to Reuters.
The president was asked about Trump’s allegations at a joint news press conference in the Rose Garden after meetings with the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.
Obama noted that U.S. elections are monitored and run by local officials, some of which are likely appointed by Republican governors. The president added that there are no significant cases of voter fraud in American elections, and “no serious” person would suggest there was.
Following the president’s remarks, Trump said Obama should quit campaigning for Clinton and “get out and work on jobs and work on the border.”
