John Kerry Should Only Be Mad at Himself

Secretary of State John Kerry was in rare form on Wednesday as he defended the Obama administration’s unprecedented decision to abstain from a Security Council vote condemning Israel for their settlements. In his speech, Kerry warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that his government was responsible for making peace with the Palestinians impossible.

“The status quo is leading toward one state, or perpetual occupation,” Kerry said, using his I’m Very Serious and I Really Mean It voice. Using that tone, he surmised that Israel could not exist for much longer if it did not come around to embrace the two-state solution that several consecutive American administrations have pursued.

Kerry took a direct swipe at Netanyahu at one point, obliquely replying to the prime minister’s statement that “friends don’t take friends to the Security Council.”

“Some seem to believe that the U.S. friendship means the U.S. must accept any policy, regardless of our own interests, our own positions, our own words, our own principles — even after urging again and again that the policy must change,” he said. “Friends need to tell each other the hard truths, and friendships require mutual respect.”

Well, there’s a world of difference between telling each other the “hard truths” – note the underlying assumption that Kerry’s position IS the truth – and embarrassing them on an international platform. The U.N. resolution does not necessarily have any tangible repercussions, but it weakens the U.S.-Israel alliance and it gives undue legitimacy to all of the Arab dictatorships that want to see our “friends” wiped off the face of the planet.

Kerry said that under Netanyahu’s government, Israel had strayed too far to the right.

“The Israeli prime minister publicly supports a two-state solution, but his current coalition is the most right wing in Israeli history, with an agenda driven by its most extreme elements,” he said. “The result is that policies of this government — which the prime minister himself just described as ‘more committed to settlements than any in Israel’s history’ — are leading in the opposite direction, towards one state.”

Of course, Kerry isn’t actually angry about Israeli settlements; he’s angry about his own failure to produce peace in the Middle East. And now he and Obama are taking their frustrations out on Netanyahu in an attempt to make it seem like they did everything they could to secure a treaty.

In truth, the only thing the two of them accomplished was the signing of the Iranian nuclear agreement – a deal that put Israel’s future in greater jeopardy than it has been since the 1960s. Now they are compounding the damage by leaving Israel at the mercy of the United Nations.

The world will be a safer place when these idiots are out of office.
