Republican Lures Donors with AR-15 Giveaway

A candidate in the race for Rep. Tom Price’s newly-vacant seat in Congress is offering donors the chance to win an AR-15 rifle if they contribute to her campaign. Amy Kremer is running for Georgia’s 6th District seat, and the Tea Party activist is putting her support for the Second Amendment at the forefront of the campaign.

“Help send a message to Washington by Supporting Amy and Winning an AR-15,” her campaign said in an email to prospective donors.

In the email, Kremer explained that a recent court decision upheld the legality of a Maryland ban on military-style rifles, saying the Second Amendment did not grant civilians access to combat weaponry.

“Under this chilling decision, not only is the AR-15 a ‘weapon of war,’ so are handguns, shotguns, bolt-action rifles, and hunting knives,” Kremer wrote.

She has vowed to oppose laws that curtail the right to bear arms and sees the AR-15 giveaway as a symbolic gesture of defiance. “We will not surrender the rights granted by God and preserved in the U.S. Constitution,” she wrote.

In an interview with her local NBC affiliate, Kremer said she saw nothing wrong with the offer.

“Giveaways like these have been done in a lot of campaigns; I wish I could take credit for it,” said Kremer. “We are very pro-2nd Amendment not only in Georgia but in the south.”

But, she said, gun rights were only one facet of her campaign.

“We need more conservatives in Washington,” Kremer said. “The GOP is dragging its feet in terms of rejecting Obamacare and implementing the president’s initiatives. I worked with Tom Price to fight against Obamacare before it was even called Obamacare.”

The seat is open, of course, because Price took a job in the Trump administration as the new Secretary of Health and Human Services. Kremer is an avowed Trump supporter herself as well as one of the founding activists behind the Tea Party movement.

We’ll let the 6th District of Georgia decide for themselves, but she doesn’t sound like the worst person to send to Washington – especially when Trump can use all the legislative support he can get.

And hey, when’s the last time a Republican tried a stunt this creative and, yet, politically relevant? For the gun giveaway alone, voters should give Kremer a fair look.
