The Des Moines Register published a letter this week from seven female pastors in the area, where the clergywomen expressed their unified support for the country’s largest abortionist: Planned Parenthood. The women represented churches in the Des Moines area, including United Methodist, Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and Episcopal Church, though they noted that their letter was not intended to represent the views of their denominations, nor their parishioners.
The women didn’t even bother to hide behind the usual “women’s healthcare” facade; they come right out and touch (implicitly, but still) on the abortion issue.
“As clergy and as women, we oppose any action by the Iowa Legislature to restrict a woman’s ability to make her own health care and reproductive decisions or to access health care services,” they wrote. “Additionally, we support Planned Parenthood of the Heartland and the excellent care it provides for any woman who chooses its health care services.”
The women were writing in reference to a new bill passed by the Iowa Senate that would defund Planned Parenthood and all other abortion clinics in the state, instead directing funds to clinics that do not perform abortions. Ironically, they argued that Iowa Republicans were basing the law on their religious beliefs.
“All arguments against a woman’s reproductive choices are based in morality and religious beliefs, using those religious beliefs to change the law and infringe upon the rights of women,” they wrote. “Through our faiths, we are joining together to balance those arguments and to assure legislators that the religious community does not speak with one voice.”
Well, at a certain level, the arguments for all of our society’s laws have grounding in morality. If you didn’t believe it was wrong to kill another human being, why would it be illegal to do so? Democrats and Republicans seem to agree that killing a baby is wrong; the argument doesn’t come down to religion, it comes down to when we afford a fetus “personhood.”
From a practical standpoint, the idea that this political and financial behemoth known as Planned Parenthood will have to start closing clinics if they aren’t funded by the taxpayers is one of the biggest crocks ever foisted on the American public. The company is far too valuable to modern Democrats, and it is much too valuable to the feminist base for the donors to ever let it shutter its doors.
As for these pastors, we know that Christians come from all political stripes, but this is a sick sight to behold.
