According to a new report in The Nation – a news outlet that can hardly be described as “right wing” – the Democratic National Committee was not hacked by Russia last summer. It was, in fact, not hacked by anyone.
“There was no hack of the Democratic National Committee’s system on July 5 last year – not be the Russians, not by anyone else,” said the report, relaying the conclusions of several former NSA computer techs. “Hard science now demonstrates it was a leak – a download executed locally with a memory key or a similarly portable data-storage device. In short, it was an inside job by someone with access to the DNC’s system.”
According to the experts who spoke with The Nation, a remote hack of the DNC’s servers could be ruled out – simply because it would have been impossible to perform.
“This casts serious doubt on the initial ‘hack,’ as alleged, that led to the very consequential publication of a large store of documents on WikiLeaks last summer,” the experts surmised.
The former NSA analysts also concluded that the initial leaks were infused with falsely tainted with forensic evidence meant to make it appear as though the Kremlin’s hands were all over the hack.
“Forensic investigations of documents made public two weeks prior to the July 5 leak by the person or entity known as Guccifer 2.0 show that they were fraudulent,” the experts said. “Before Guccifer posted them, they were adulterated by cutting and pasting them into a blank template that had Russian as its default language. Guccifer took responsibility on June 15 for an intrusion the DNC reported on June 14 and professed to be a WikiLeaks source — claims essential to the official narrative implicating Russia in what was soon cast as an extensive hacking operation. To put the point simply, forensic science now devastates this narrative.”
These are not cybersleuths hanging out on some pro-Trump message board somewhere. These are a group of highly-trained, highly-experience experts who have been working this case since last July. And while that doesn’t necessarily mean they are right, the onus is now on the National Security Agency to provide proof to the American people that they correctly identified Moscow as the intruding force behind last year’s DNC email scandal.
This isn’t just important from the standpoint of protecting Donald Trump’s presidency – although that’s a big part of it. The assumption that Russia materially interfered in our democracy is shading our entire foreign policy mechanism and making it nearly impossible for our government to ease tensions with Moscow. Furthermore, if the DNC and Obama’s national security agencies collaborated to create a “Russia story” out of smoke, we are looking at a criminal conspiracy unprecedented in the annals of political history.
