It feels like it’s been a while since we had our last good “The End of the World is Coming” cult hysteria, so it’s refreshing to know that these things haven’t completely passed out of existence. Nearly as old as the Earth itself, conspiracy theories about the world’s impending doom are as enduring and long-lasting as the human beings who believe in them. Or, as is the case with 99.9% of the population, scoff at them and call their believers whack-jobs.
Of course, one of them could always be right…even if by coincidence.
This time around, Christian numerology is responsible for the claim. A man named David Meade says that a specific combination of Bible verses, astrological alignments, and markings on the Egyptian pyramids points to September 23, 2017 as the Day It All Ends for humanity as we know it. Meade says that on that date, the mysterious (and quite nonexistent) Planet X will collide with Earth on Saturday…so don’t get too attached to your picnic plans.
Meade’s faith in doom comes partly from the Gospel of Luke, Chapter 21, Verses 25 and 26:
“25: There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.
“26: Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.”
Hmm, yep, sounds like this Saturday, all right…
The “signs” referred to in the prophecy, according to Meade and his followers, have been fulfilled by recent hurricanes as well as the unusual – but far from unique – lineup of the sun, moon, and Jupiter in Virgo. This occurs once every 12 years, but proponents say that this time it will be accompanied by an astrological phenomenon known as “the lion of the tribe of Judah,” which sets this particular alignment apart.
In an interview with the Express, however, author Jonathan Sarfati said that even that specific planetary alignment has happened before.
“As usual with any astrology (or Christian adaptations of it), one cherry-picks the stars that fit the desired conclusion,” Sarfati said. “There is nothing to suggest that 23 September is a momentous date for biblical prophecy, and Christians need to be careful about being drawn into such sensationalist claims.”
Okay, fine, we’ll put away the sandwich board and the clanging bell, as much as we were really hoping that this might explain some strange recent occurrences…like President Trump’s unseemly immigration deal with the Democrats.
Guess we’ll go back to blaming Ivanka and Jared.
