We talked yesterday about the troubling ideas about free speech circulating among the faculty at the University of Florida, but today we’re headed to the other side of the country for a look at an even more disturbing turn of events. The University of California is quickly gaining a reputation for being Ground Zero for liberal intolerance. Incidents at the Riverside and Berkeley campuses have made national news. Now, however, it is the Santa Cruz campus that’s in the headlines, after a group of liberal protesters invaded and shut down a College Republicans meeting with protests and cries of racism.
According to Campus Reform, the trouble started when a lone student came into the library to ask what the meeting was all about. The attendees informed the student that it was a gathering of the College Republicans, at which point the student went on their merry way. Some 15 minutes later, the student returned…this time with a group of rabid leftists.
Behold the Facebook call to action that attracted student activists to the library:
“White Supremacist, fascist sympathizing College Republicans are having a meeting at McHenry library, room 0332. Everybody be aware of this violent racist activity happening everyday on this campus! We need a movement of people on this campus that rejects the ‘right of assembly,’ or ‘right of free speech’ for white supremacists and fascists.”
Please remember that these are not the words of some idiot on the streets of Ferguson or some frothing feminist in the comment section at Jezebel. This is a presumably halfway-intelligent college student calling on other halfway-intelligent college students to drop what they’re doing and interrupt a meeting of Republicans because it is “violent racist activity.”
Heed the call, they did. Shortly after the student posted the message, activists showed up at the library with chants of “fascists,” “racists,” and “white supremacists.”
From there, things got even uglier. From Campus Reform:
According to the UCSC College Republicans, their offers to discuss the concerns of the protesters were met with exclamations that “dialogue is violence,” after which the protesters called the club’s presence a “threat to the library” and demanded that the CR members vacate the space immediately.
The protesters even reportedly berated library staff members when they refused to shut down the pre-approved meeting. One staff member eventually asked the CR members to leave in order to end the disturbance, but meeting attendees chose to respond by sitting quietly and refusing to leave the area.
Judging by the reports we’ve heard, the majority of students found the protesters ridiculous and out of line, which gives us a smidgen of hope about the future of our democracy. But it cannot be denied that these incidents are growing in both frequency and magnitude. Maybe idiots like these do not represent the majority of millennial liberals, but they do represent a cancer that is spreading like wildfire across American academia.
Whatever chemo is needed to cure this disease, it’s long past time to deploy it.
