Who would have guessed that after all this time, the first significant Russian bombshell to actually emerge from these neverending investigations would come back and slap Hillary Clinton and the Democrats right in the face?
Well, probably most of you guessed it, because it’s been obvious for a long time that this so-called “collusion” investigation was a partisan witch hunt from the very beginning. But still, we thought the Democrats would have done a slightly better job covering their tracks. And we would have never guessed that they would have eventually come out and admitted their role in instigating this absurd story.
But that’s what happened this week when Clinton campaign/DNC lawyer Marc Elias went on record to admit that his law firm paid for Fusion GPS, the oppo research firm that ultimately came up with the infamous Russian “dossier” that caused such a scandal last December.
From the Washington Post:
The Hillary Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee helped fund research that resulted in a now-famous dossier containing allegations about President Trump’s connections to Russia and possible coordination between his campaign and the Kremlin, people familiar with the matter said.
Marc E. Elias, a lawyer representing the Clinton campaign and the DNC, retained Fusion GPS, a Washington firm, to conduct the research.
After that, Fusion GPS hired dossier author Christopher Steele, a former British intelligence officer with ties to the FBI and the U.S. intelligence community, according to those people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Elias and his law firm, Perkins Coie, retained the company in April 2016 on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the DNC. Before that agreement, Fusion GPS’s research into Trump was funded by an unknown Republican client during the GOP primary.
The Clinton campaign and the DNC, through the law firm, continued to fund Fusion GPS’s research through the end of October 2016, days before Election Day.
If anyone was still taking this “dossier” seriously, then the time for that has surely now passed. This was a piece of fiction funded by desperate political operatives who needed a way to bring down the most impressive Republican phenomenon to come along since Ronald Reagan. And shamefully, they continued to use this fiction to damage his presidency and cast doubts on the legitimacy of the election long after their defeat was cemented in history.
Not only should we demand that the Russian collusion investigations be put to an end, we should think seriously about bringing Clinton, Elias, and DNC officials before Congress to explain in great detail how they helped mislead the American people with a tale of treason for their own political gain. They said from the beginning that this was one of the darkest moments in our democracy’s history…and boy, were they right about that.
