President Trump was back in fighting form on Saturday after maintaining a rather quiet Twitter presence for the past week. It was good to have Classic Trump back for the day, because there were no shortage of fake news purveyors who deserved to be taken down a peg. Trump took aim at Brian Ross at ABC News, the charlatan who reported incorrectly that Trump – as a candidate – told Michael Flynn to make contact with the Russian government. He took aim at the Washington Post’s Dave Weigel for posting phony pictures of empty stands at Trump’s Pensacola rally the night before. And he put CNN on blast once again for their sensationalized and just-plain-wrong story about Trump and WikiLeaks.
“Fake News CNN made a vicious and purposeful mistake yesterday,” he wrote. “They were caught redhanded, just like lonely Brian Ross at ABC News (who should be immediately fired for his ‘mistake’). Watch to see if @CNN fires those responsible, or was it just gross incompetence?”
Why not both?
In another tweet, President Trump continued his assault on his favorite media punching bag.
“CNN’s slogan is CNN, THE MOST TRUSTED NAME IN NEWS. Everyone knows this is not true, that this could, in fact, be a fraud on the American Public,” he wrote. “There are many outlets that are far more trusted than Fake News CNN. Their slogan should be CNN, THE LEAST TRUSTED NAME IN NEWS!”
If there’s a motion on the floor, we second it. CNN is an embarrassment to responsible journalism, and they proved it once again on Friday with a report claiming that Donald Trump Jr. was given a “heads-up” email on September 4, 2016, saying that a new WikiLeaks trove of Democrat documents was coming. Of course, as it happened, this was a lie. As other, more responsible news outlets reported the story, Trump Jr. didn’t get the email in question until ten days later, which meant the documents were already published on WikiLeaks and already a matter of public record.
The problem isn’t just that CNN got the date wrong, even though that’s a huge mistake and should result in disciplinary action. The problem is also that this story – even if it WERE true – is just a huge nothingburger. On Friday, CNN was acting as though this was some kind of smoking gun. Ooh, Trump got an email saying that WikiLeaks was about to publish some Democrat dirt. Well, so what? What of it? Did the email come from Vladimir Putin? Did it come from a Russian hacker? Did Trump solicit this email? Then how the hell is this the smoking gun? How would this prove that Trump “colluded” with Russia? It makes zero sense, even before you get to the tiny, insignificant point that CNN LIED ABOUT THE DATE.
We can hardly even mount a good head of anger about these lying hooligans anymore. They are what they are and they do what they do. They’re losing trust by the day. The American public is getting wiser to their shenanigans with every false story and biased article. As far as we’re concerned, they can keep right on digging their own grave.
