A bombshell Politico story could lead to some major federal investigations into President Obama’s meddling into ongoing law enforcement actions against the international terrorist organization known as Hezbollah. According to the story, which cited several sources close to the ongoing investigation into the group, Obama’s State Department and Justice Department sandbagged the DEA when it came time to start prosecuting members of Hezbollah for drug crimes and money-laundering. They did this, the sources believe, to help preserve the Iran nuclear deal. It would do no good, Obama thought, to get on Iran’s bad side while negotiations were on the table.
Unfortunately, this allowed Hezbollah actors to get away with their crimes and to continue building their crime organization into a behemoth that was funding (and being funded by) Iran’s rogue government.
Now Jeff Sessions wants answers.
From Fox News:
Attorney General Jeff Sessions is launching a review of a law enforcement initiative called Project Cassandra after an investigative report was published this week claiming the Obama administration gave a free pass to Hezbollah’s drug-trafficking and money-laundering operations to help ensure the Iran nuclear deal would stay on track.
The Justice Department said in a statement to Fox News that Sessions on Friday directed a review of prior Drug Enforcement Administration investigations “to evaluate allegations that certain matters were not properly prosecuted and to ensure all matters are appropriately handled.”
“While I am hopeful that there were no barriers constructed by the last administration to allowing DEA agents to fully bring all appropriate cases under Project Cassandra, this is a significant issue for the protection of Americans,” Sessions said in a written statement. “We will review these matters and give full support to investigations of violent drug trafficking organizations.”
It is already a matter of public record that Obama bent over backwards to get the deal signed with Iran. Just on the terms of the deal itself, the agreement is massively lopsided, considering the players involved. Iran received billions of dollars in previously-frozen assets – money they have since used to fund their ongoing disruptive military work in Syria and Iraq, build rockets with Israel’s name on them, and finance terrorism around the globe. And in return, we got a ten-year moratorium on their nuclear weapons pursuit – a pause in proceedings that we can’t even properly verify. What a deal.
Now we learn that not only did this deal put Iran on a smooth, if delayed, path to a nuclear weapon, but that it also railroaded an investigation into Hezbollah. Unbelievable.
Sessions and Congress need to get to the bottom of this scandal and tear the Iran deal apart with investigations, because we’re quite sure we haven’t heard the worst of it yet.
