President Donald Trump is closely watching the open immigration reform debate going on in the Senate, and he’s hopeful that Republicans and Democrats can come together on an acceptable solution. But in comments made Tuesday and reported by Axios, the key word there may be “acceptable.” Trump wants to make it clear that he’s not just going to sign any Amnesty-for-Dreamers bill that lands on his desk. If the Democrats want to extend DACA into legislative form, they’re going to have to give the White House some major concessions.
From Axios:
A senior administration official said Tuesday night that President Trump “will veto any bill that doesn’t advance his common-sense immigration reforms” — a hardening of the White House bargaining position as the Senate begins an epic debate.
[…]
The administration official said: “The White House has claimed the mainstream, middle ground on immigration.”
“By opposing the president’s framework, Democrats are making it clear that they care more about donors than Dreamers.”
“Republicans have Democrats backed into a corner,” the official added. “Democratic leaders are now catering to the far-left activist wing of their base.”
Axios also spoke to an unnamed Senate Democrat, and what he said was revealing because it shows you how right the White House official is. The Democrats seem to believe that TRUMP will pay a political price for ending DACA without a congressional fix! Did they even watch the 2016 election? Do they have any clue as to what Trump’s campaign rhetoric was?
“Republicans are in charge of Congress, the President ended DACA, and if deportations come, it’ll be Donald Trump’s ICE agents doing the deportations,” the Democrat said. “Republicans will own any failure to get a result here. Period.”
We’re accustomed to seeing Democrats take positions that are anti-American, anti-worker, anti-business, anti-tradition, anti-religion, and anti-life, but it’s not often you see them hunker down on something that is so clearly a political loser. Trump’s entire political risk comes from SIGNING amnesty for Dreamers, not rejecting it. He knows that all too well. He wants wall funding and an end to chain migration and the diversity lottery in return for his signature. If Democrats think they can botch this and blame Republicans, go ahead – it’s not Republican voters who care about this crap.
