Rapper Kanye West has been portrayed by the media as a lunatic, an idiot, and an Uncle Tom for embracing President Donald Trump, but that hasn’t stopped the superstar from forging his own path. This week, West announced the start of his Blexit clothing line – apparel that supports the growing movement of blacks leaving the Democratic Party en masse.
From USA Today:
The merchandise, which proudly touts “Design by Kanye West,” debuted at the Turning Point USA’s Young Black Leadership Summit in Washington Saturday.
“Blexit is a renaissance and I am blessed to say that this logo, these colors, were created by my dear friend and fellow superhero Kanye West,” the group’s communication director Candace Owens announced to the crowd.
The “Blexit” movement encourages the black community and “free thinkers across the country” to abandon “an emotionally abusive relationship” with the Democratic party, in pursuit of “freedom over tyranny.”
Some have characterized Kanye’s support for Trump in recent months as a signal that he is readily embracing a conservative ideology. This doesn’t really match up with the facts, though. There is no conservative platform for abolishing the 13th amendment, ratcheting up stricter gun laws, or pushing for a socialist mayor in Chicago who has promised to oppose school choice and tax cuts. These are all things that West has supported in recent weeks. He styles himself an independent thinker, and his political ideology is reflective of that.
But while Kanye West may never be anyone’s idea of an ideal Republican, the mere fact that he is a prominent and popular black man questioning the legacy of the Democratic Party is enough to make him an enormously powerful weapon against the left. From a purely practical standpoint, if he can only convince his African-American fans to start thinking about supporting Trump or, at the very least, ceasing their support for the Democrats, he will have done more than enough to Make America Great Again all on his own.
