Mexicans Protest the Caravan as Thousands of “Bums” Arrive in Tijuana

Tijuana Mayor Juan Manuel Gastelum has referred to the Honduran members of a U.S.-bound caravan as “bums” and it seems that many of his city’s residents agree wholeheartedly. Gastelum is considering a city-wide referendum that would determine whether or not the caravan members – arriving in the city this week – should be allowed to stay there for months while awaiting entry into the United States. If he holds such a vote, the caravan members may discover that they are no more welcome in Mexico than they are in the U.S.

And why would they be? According to the Department of Homeland Security, there are more than 500 criminals embedded in the caravan. And contrary to what the media would like us to believe, the vast majority of Central Americans traveling with the caravan are young military-aged men – NOT helpless women and children fleeing for sanctuary. These men want to come to the U.S. for work and economic asylum, which is not a valid reason to claim refugee status.

“All legal options are on the table, and we have been negotiating with all our partners in Central America with ways to deal with the caravan,” DHS officials told reporters on Monday.

Already, American officials say there are at least 6,000 migrants in Tijuana waiting to be allowed to cross into the U.S. where they intend to apply for refugee status. More are quickly coming behind them.

Unfortunately for them, the U.S. has no intention of hurrying along their claims. They could indeed be kept waiting on the Mexican side of the border for months while waiting to get processed into the country. That’s exactly what Tijuana residents do not want, and they are hitting the streets in protest. This weekend, the Associated Press reported that hundreds of locals gathered under an Aztec monument to protest the arrival of the migrants, shouting “Out! Out!”

“We don’t want them in Tijuana,” protesters chanted.

Protester Patricia Reyes told NPR that she was disgusted with the way the Hondurans had taken over the city.

“We want the caravan to go; they are invading us,” said Reyes. “They should have come into Mexico correctly, legally, but they came in like animals.”

Another demonstrator, Magdalena Baltazar, had much the same message this weekend.

“Tijuana is a place that welcomes anyone, but you must have papers, you must identify yourself,” she said. “We work hard here. We don’t get handouts. The government shouldn’t be giving things to migrants when plenty of Mexicans are in a difficult position.”

What happens to these migrants from here, we shall see. But it’s interesting to see that there are plenty of Mexicans who feel just as Americans do as it pertains to these illegals. We’re sure liberal Democrats will label them all “racists” for refusing to accept their Honduran hermanos into their country.
