Will CNN Boss Run Against Donald Trump in 2020?

CNN head honcho Jeff Zucker has apparently had so much fun over the last three years turning the news network into the on-air “hero” to Donald Trump’s “villain” that he’s talked himself into actually going out there and running for president himself. Will Zucker leave the cushy confines of CNN Center behind for a stab at the White House? Will the feud between CNN and Trump give way to a real-life political battle between the president and Jeff Zucker? Oh, and how many Democrats can actually fit on one primary stage?

These questions and more will surely be answered soon, but for now we only have Zucker telling David Axelrod that he would still like to make a go at public office of some sort.

“I still harbor somewhere in my gut that I’m still very interested in politics,” he said Monday.

Well, with bizarrely-crafted statements like that, Zucker definitely has a knack for politico-speak. Either that, or years of fake news has left him unable to string together an authentic sentence.

Whether Zucker actually intends to throw his hat into the presidential ring or not, reports have it that he may have to look for another job very soon. His bosses over at AT&T are apparently not pleased with Zucker driving CNN’s ratings to third place behind MSNBC and Fox News.

Zucker was asked about Trump during the interview. Axelrod asked him if Trump’s anti-CNN rhetoric was at all “personal,” having to do more with the relationship between himself and Zucker than any real animus against the network.

“He attacks CNN for a couple of reasons. One, we’re relevant. If we weren’t relevant, if we didn’t matter, he’d just ignore us,” Zucker said. “He understands that CNN matters. He understands that CNN matters in the United States and around the world. And he understands that CNN has a disproportionate amount of swing and independent voters.”

Well, CNN is relevant in that it is a major news network. It’s relevant in that it is still coasting on its reputation from twenty years ago. It’s relevant in that it seems to be the default news network at all major airports. Other than that? Not so much. It’s getting left in the dust by its cable news competitors, its anchors and reporters regularly embarrass themselves with unprofessional, biased behavior, and it has aired more fake news over the last three years than The Onion and the Babylon Bee put together. THAT’S why Trump attacks CNN. And that’s why he’s justified in doing so.
