Oh: When Democrats Use Russian Tactics, It’s Called an “Experiment”

There’s a fascinating piece in The New York Times this week about a group of Democrat techies who used Russian election tactics to try and influence the Doug Jones/Roy Moore election in Alabama in 2017. But what’s perhaps more fascinating than the story itself is the way it is presented by the Times and other left-wing outlets. Do they rake these Democrats over the coals for meddling in our democracy with their fake news and their unethical manipulations of social media? Of course not. They present their efforts as “experiments” that were “likely too small to have a significant effect on the race.”

From The New York Times:

One participant in the Alabama project, Jonathon Morgan, is the chief executive of New Knowledge, a small cyber security firm that wrote a scathing account of Russia’s social media operations in the 2016 election that was released this week by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

An internal report on the Alabama effort, obtained by The New York Times, says explicitly that it “experimented with many of the tactics now understood to have influenced the 2016 elections.”

The project’s operators created a Facebook page on which they posed as conservative Alabamians, using it to try to divide Republicans and even to endorse a write-in candidate to draw votes from Mr. Moore. It involved a scheme to link the Moore campaign to thousands of Russian accounts that suddenly began following the Republican candidate on Twitter, a development that drew national media attention.

“We orchestrated an elaborate ‘false flag’ operation that planted the idea that the Moore campaign was amplified on social media by a Russian botnet,” the report says.

Here’s another fascinating part about this story. We can’t say that we recall Moore being tied to all these Russian accounts online (hell, isn’t every single conservative politician/cause said to be aligned with the Russians nowadays), but sure enough, we found some stories in the media at the time. And guess what Moore said? He said they were the product of Democrat operatives trying to lay a trap for his campaign. Reporters roundly mocked him on Twitter for that accusation.

Wonder if they’ll own up to their bias now…

We’re kidding, of course. They were probably just running “experiments” of their own.

“The research project was intended to help us understand how these kind of campaigns operated,” Morgan told the Times. “We thought it was useful to work in the context of a real election but design it to have almost no impact.”

Say, maybe the Kremlin was just running a “research project” in 2016. Harmless good science, that’s all.

The media and their refusal to hold Democrats accountable for anything is turning into something nearly beyond parody at this point.
