Outgoing Democrat: Why is Everyone So Hyped About Ocasio-Cortez?

In an interview with CNN, outgoing Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) said that she wasn’t impressed with the sudden rise of incoming Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). McCaskill, who has been warning the Democratic Party in recent days that they risk losing more of the white working class if they drift further down the progressive path, told the network that she saw the rising socialist star as little more than a flash in the pan.

“I’m a little confused why she’s the thing,” McCaskill said. “But it’s a good example of what I’m talking about, a bright shiny new object, came out of nowhere and surprised people when she beat a very experienced congressman.”

Ocasio-Cortez was a former bartender when she decided to launch an insurgent Bernie Sanders-style campaign for New York’s 14^th Congressional District this year. She garnered headlines and instant political fame when she dethroned veteran lawmaker Joe Crowley in the primaries, and has become a favorite plaything for the media in the meantime. On the conservative side, Ocasio-Cortez has been mercilessly mocked for her all-too-frequent demonstrations of ignorance which seem to indicate a decided lack of depth to her intellectual façade.

As for McCaskill, she said that while she felt no animosity towards Ocasio-Cortez, there was a huge difference between talking the talk and walking the walk.

“She’s now talked about a lot,” McCaskill said. “I’m not sure what she’s done yet to generate that kind of enthusiasm, but I wish her well. I hope she hangs the moon. The rhetoric is cheap. Getting results is a lot harder.”

McCaskill said that Ocasio-Cortez should remember that not everyone in the country thinks like her supporters in the Bronx.

“I hope she also realizes that the parts of the country that are rejecting the Democratic Party, like a whole lot of white working-class voters, need to hear about how their work is going to be respected, and the dignity of their jobs, and how we can really stick to issues that we can actually accomplish something on,” McCaskill said.

Can’t say we would ever cast a vote for Claire McCaskill in any reasonable scenario…except one where the only other choice was an avowed leftist like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. We continue to believe that, despite all the hype in certain internet circles, this Sander/AOC fad is destined for the dustbin of history…and sooner rather than later.

If we’re wrong, though, and those progressive-style Democrats are the future of both their party and our country, God help us all.
