For the last two years, Democrats have bemoaned our hotly-divided nation, but now that they have a little bit of power in Congress, they are going to blast those divisions wide open. Few events in recent memory have so sharply pitted Americans against each other like the shameful confirmation hearings of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Thankfully, he got through to the court despite one of the most bitter, reckless, fact-free smear jobs we’ve ever seen in Washington. The wise thing, right now, would be to put that disgusting episode as far in the rearview mirror as we possibly can. You may love Kavanaugh or you may hate him, but the fact remains that he’s on the court. It’s done. Live with it.
But Democrats aren’t willing to do that. No, they’re talking about impeaching him.
“Joe Neguse, a Colorado Democrat elected in 2018 to serve the state’s second congressional district, told supporters on Friday the committee could move to impeach the newly-appointed justice if their findings prove he knowingly lied to lawmakers during his confirmation process,” reports The Independent. “Donald Trump’s second pick to serve a lifelong appointment on the Supreme Court was alleged to have provided misleading statements surrounding sexual assault accusations leveled against him by Deborah Ramirez, a former Yale classmate.”
In an interview, Neguse said: “There’s no question he committed perjury during the confirmation hearings and so forth. I think the Judiciary Committee is likely to take that up.”
That would be a horrendous mistake. Neguse is referring to the fact that Kavanaugh, at one point in the hearings, claimed to learn of Ramirez’s accusation against him for the first time in the New Yorker article.
But that is of course impossible (and ludicrous to claim) since Kavanaugh is quoted IN THE ARTICLE as denying the incident ever took place. So it is beyond obvious that he was telling the Judiciary Committee that he learned about the incident through the reporters, not through the publication of the story. And this is such a silly, insignificant detail that it would be ridiculous to actually pursue an investigation.
The Democrats don’t care about any of that, of course. They are looking to prove to their base that they’re doing everything possible to “avenge” Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Doing everything they can to prevent the “tragedy” that would be the reversal of Roe v. Wade. And doing everything they can to #Resist Trump and his nominees. It makes for terrible governance and a more bitterly divided nation.
If there is a silver lining, it’s that voters may become quite disgusted with the Democrats for pursuing this phony case. And maybe that will lead to them making a better decision with their vote in 2020.
