It’s been pretty amusing to watch liberal Democrats struggle to figure out how to respond to President Trump’s plan to ship illegal immigrants to sanctuary cities following their mandatory detention at the border.
At first, the reaction to the Washington Post article was predictable and followed the usual lines of attack. Trump is a lawless dictator using the rule of law against his political enemies, he has no concern for humanity, he is a Hitler in the making, blah blah blah, show us your taxes.
But then, when a moment or two had passed, at least a few liberals realized that it made no sense to oppose this idea. They were only opposing it because it was something Trump came up with. Because when you think about it, why wouldn’t Democrats want Trump to do this? Wouldn’t this make it much more challenging for Trump’s evil, jackbooted ICE agents to deport these poor folks who are just here to make a better life for themselves? Wouldn’t this be the greatest opportunity for the Democrats in San Francisco, Chicago, and elsewhere to put their money where their mouths are? They insist that illegal immigrants hang the moon and put the colors in the rainbow. Shouldn’t they jump at the chance to welcome more of them into their welcoming sanctuaries?
But still, most Democrats are sticking with their first instincts. When it doubt, blame Trump, you know? They like to dwell in their comfort zone. But their strange take on this subject did not escape the president’s notice.
“So interesting to see the Mayor of Oakland and other Sanctuary Cities NOT WANT our currently ‘detained immigrants’ after release due to the ridiculous court ordered 20 day rule,” Trump tweeted.
It IS interesting.
Trump’s tweet drew a response from Mayor Libby Schaaf, previously known as the woman who actually tipped off illegals in Oakland that ICE was planning a raid in her area.
“It’s time to stop fanning hate and division @realDonaldTrump,” she tweeted. “I’ve been consistent and clear: #Oakland welcomes all, no matter where you came from or how you got here.”
Yeah right. So you won’t mind if Customs and Border Patrol just starts shipping immigrants by the hundred-thousand up to your city, right? We await your detailed plan of acceptance, and we’re sure the citizens of Oakland are eager to hear about it as well.
“Just out,” Trump tweeted a short while later. “The USA has the absolute legal right to have apprehended illegal immigrants transferred to Sanctuary Cities. We hereby demand that they be taken care of at the highest level, especially by the State of California, which is well known for its poor management & high taxes!”
We fail to see how this is an example of Trump abusing his power or exacting revenge on his political enemies. These cities are on record saying they want to protect illegal immigrants from deportation. You guys said it, not Trump. He’s giving you what you said you wanted. You should embrace it with open arms.
