In a press conference on Tuesday, top Democrats from Congress made it clear that if it comes down to choosing between Iran and the Trump administration, well, they’re siding with the Islamists. Slamming President Trump using a variety of Tehran’s talking points, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill) and other leading Democrats insisted that the administration was putting us on a collision course for war with their nasty attempts to isolate the Iranian regime.
“Make no mistake, this president and his administration are itching for a confrontation with Iran,” Durbin said. “Look at what they’ve done: Walked away from the agreement we had with allies, unlikely allies, all around the world to stop the development of nuclear weapons in Iran. President Trump walked away. Then he declared the Iran guard as a terrorist organization, then he increased the sanctions on that country and then they leaked to the press they have a plan to form an invasionary force of 120,000 American military.”
None of that sounds like the doings of an administration “itching” for war, although we don’t doubt there are a couple of figures inside the Executive Branch who are doing just that. No, these sound like the reasonable actions of an administration trying to limit the room one of our greatest adversaries has to move around in. Apparently Durbin liked it better when John Kerry and Barack Obama were making friends with the mullahs and handing billions of dollars over to terrorists.
“I can tell you this senator and many like me are going to resist any effort to engage the United States in another war in the Middle East,” Durbin said. “The Constitution says that the Senate has the responsibility to make the decision when it comes to decisions to go to war, along with the House of Representatives. If this president thinks he can engage in another war in the Middle East without resistance from Congress he is wrong.”
It’s really remarkable to hear Democrats, on the one hand, insist that we must do everything in our power to stop Russia…and then on the other hand, insist that we have to treat Iran like the undeclared ally they seem to believe they are. Russia has no better friend on the planet than Iran. Democrats do not have a coherent foreign policy vision apart from: If Trump is doing it, it’s bad.
Oh, but that’s not all. From Politico:
SEN. DIANNE FEINSTEIN (D-CALIF.) had dinner with IRANIAN FOREIGN MINISTER JAVAD ZARIF when he was in the United States a few weeks ago, several sources told us. Last week, Playbook reported that Feinstein was walking around the Capitol with Zarif’s contact information pulled up on her iPhone — we spotted it in an elevator.
FEINSTEIN’S team tells us that the dinner was “arranged in consultation with the State Department.” “The office was in touch with State in advance of the meeting to let them know it was happening and to get an update on U.S.-Iran activity,” Feinstein’s office said. A State Department official told us that they did not ask Feinstein to go to the dinner with Zarif, a smooth-talking, American-educated Iranian diplomat who worked on the nuclear deal with John Kerry.
It’s kinda hard for the Trump administration to exercise a foreign policy plan when you have Democrats (both in Congress and out there on their own, like Kerry) undermining them at every turn. What Democrats are doing in regards to Iran is completely off-the-charts, and it is dangerous. They need to get their Trump Derangement Syndrome under control before their infection burns the world.
