Under Fire From the Left, Biden Runs From (Mild) Pro-Life Position

After facing two days of withering criticism from fanatical feminists, former Vice President Joe Biden reversed one of his longtime positions on abortion: Namely, that it should not be funded through the federal government.

Biden has been one of the few Democrats to support to Hyde Amendment, a congressional statute that does not allow federal taxpayer money to go directly to funding abortion services. But now that feminists and the larger left are engaged in a bloody battle to save their – cough, cough – constitutional right to abortion, Biden’s position is no longer tenable. Unwilling to stand on even this mild pro-life principle, the Roman Catholic candidate said Thursday that he was no longer in favor of the Amendment.

“If I believe health care is a right, as I do, I can no longer support an amendment that makes that right dependent on someone’s ZIP code,” Biden said at a DNC event in Atlanta. “I’ve been working through the finer details of my health care plan like others in this race, and I’ve been struggling with the problems that Hyde now presents.”

This is thinly-disguised code for: Boy, am I getting killed out there from the left, I gotta do somethin’ about this real quick-like!

“Folks, times have changed,” he said. “I don’t think these guys are going to let up.”

“These guys” being conservatives who actually believe that abortion is a form of murder, and that one should take a principled stand against it, no matter how popular or unpopular that stand may be in the polls…or with certain powerful left-wing interest groups.

Speaking of which, Naral Pro-Choice America was thrilled to see Biden come around to their way of thinking.

“At a time where the fundamental freedoms enshrined in Roe are under attack, we need full-throated allies in our leaders,” said Naral president Ilyse Hogue. “We’re pleased that Joe Biden has joined the rest of the 2020 Democratic field in coalescing around the Party’s core values — support for abortion rights, and the basic truth that reproductive freedom is fundamental to the pursuit of equality and economic security in this country.”

Well, there you have it. The Democratic Party’s “core values” are that abortions rights are pretty much the most important thing in America. And by relenting on the Hyde Amendment, Joe Biden has shown that while he may not be as inherently radical as his opponents, he’s more than willing to give those extremists whatever they want. That makes him just as bad.
