Rep. Elijah Cummings was beside himself last week when questioning Acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan, insisting that anyone who regarded our migrant detention policies as humane – or even necessary – was a fool or a racist or a bad person, or some combination of the three.
But while Cummings has spent a lot of time worrying deeply over the Trump administration’s efforts to keep America safe from a Central American invasion, it turns out that his own hometown of Baltimore is actually worse off than many of those nations. Indeed, maybe it’s time we give refuge to the residents of Baltimore and let Central Americans find sanctuary somewhere else.

Research by Princeton Policy Advisors’ Steven Kopits reveals that Baltimore has long had a higher murder rate than the most crime-ridden nations of Central America, where thousands of migrants flee from every year.
Based on the current rate of murders in Baltimore, Kopits projects that Baltimore’s murder rate for 2019 will come in at about 56 murders per 100,000 people — making it more than twice as dangerous as the country of Guatemala.
To date, there have been nearly 200 murders in Baltimore since the beginning of the year.
Meanwhile, El Salvador had a murder rate of 50 murders per 100,000 people in 2018, lower than Baltimore’s despite the violent MS-13 gang holding its headquarters in the small Central American country.
Likewise, Honduras is projected to have a murder rate of 38 murders per 100,000 people this year, while Guatemala had a murder rate of about 22 murders per 100,000 people in 2018.
These sickening statistics prove a lot of things. One, they show exactly what President Trump was talking about when he went on a tirade against Cummings and his home district. Two, they prove that there is absolutely nothing racist about pointing out the sad facts about Charm City. Three – and perhaps most importantly – they show why it is essential that we spend our resources fixing AMERICA before we spend them on taking in refugees from around the world.
It is often said that if we were to let everyone into this country that wanted to come, the U.S. would soon begin to resemble the very places that these refugees were fleeing in the first place. But these statistics show that, in some parts of the U.S., that is already the case. Let’s focus our efforts on cleaning up our own house before we try saving the world.
