In what feels like a direct echo of Michael Avenatti’s brief moment in the spotlight, former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci is the new flavor of the month on cable news television. Having lost the Trump-loving faith for some reason, the Mooch is now threatening to put together a coalition of like-minded individuals for a public denunciation of the president.
“I’m in the process of putting together a team of people that feel the exact same way that I do,” Scaramucci said on CNN Monday. “This is not a ‘Never Trump’ situation. This is not just screeching rhetoric. This is, ‘Ok, this guy is unstable.’ Everyone inside knows it, everyone outside knows it. Let’s see if we can find a viable alternative.”
Hmm, that actually sounds a LOT like a Never Trump situation to us. Especially with Bill Kristol – Mr. Never Trump himself – having admitted last week that he and Scaramucci have been in talks. We assume that all of this is paving the way for someone like Justin Amash or, Lord help us, David French to launch a primary campaign against Trump. What’s the matter – Bill Weld not doing it for you folks?
“Moreover, I have to get some former Cabinet officials in unity to speak up about it. They know it’s a crisis,” he added.
Oh, oh, some former Cabinet officials. Because Republican voters will definitely be swayed by the solemn warnings of a disgruntled Rex Tillerson.
Scaramucci’s CNN interview did not escape Trump’s notice. He fired back on Twitter, slamming the Mooch as a “nut job.”
“I barely knew him until his 11 days of gross incompetence-made a fool of himself, bad on TV. Abused staff,” he said. “He was a mental wreck. We didn’t want him around. Now Fake News puts him on like he was my buddy!”
They will deny it up and down, but any Republican that supports the kind of effort that Scaramucci is talking about is actually supporting the Democratic Party. And if you’re supporting the Democratic Party at this stage in the game, you are supporting open borders, socialized medicine, anti-Israel policies, anti-police policies, late-term abortion, and a whole host of other nasty propositions. You can disavow those policies all you like, but that’s what you’re inviting when and if you turn against Donald Trump.
Still, it’s not really worth getting worked up about. Never Trump Republicans were annoying in 2016, but they are basically ludicrous in 2019. Good for a laugh, but not much else.
