In an interview with The College Fix this week, noted Johns Hopkins University psychiatrist Paul McHugh expressed considerable doubts about the modern view of medical and mental health clinics when it comes to treating patients with gender dysphoria. While the line on transgender treatment these days is that these people can be helped best by being “transitioned” into the gender that matches their inner feelings, McHugh says that the scientific rationale behind that philosophy is lacking.
Doctors treating patients with hormones, McHugh said, “don’t have evidence that (this form of treatment) will be the right one.”
“Many people are doing what amounts to an experiment on these young people without telling them it’s an experiment,” he told The Fix. “You need evidence for that and this is a very serious treatment. It is comparable to doing frontal lobotomies.”
McHugh said there were numerous recent studies that conclude that generalized mental illness is one of the best predictors of gender dysphoria.
“I think their mental problems, often depression and discouragement, are the things that need treatment,” he opined. “I’m not positive about this. It’s a hypothesis, but it is a very plausible hypothesis, and it would explain why many of the people who go on to have treatment of their body discover they are just as depressed, discouraged and live just as problematic lives as they did before because they did not address the primary problem.”
It is a sign of how far ahead of the scientific curve McHugh is that he’s not only willing to question the current status quo on transgender treatment, but actually ADMIT that he could be wrong! That alone proves that he is far more committed to the actual study of psychiatric science than most of his “woke” colleagues, who are content to take their marching orders from the LGBT lobby.
Concerns about the integrity of science aside, though, the real tragedy here is that we’re throwing these young men and women to the wolves for the excuse of being politically correct. McHugh hit the nail on the head with that lobotomy comparison. Hell, we’re back in the age of slapping leeches on patients to help suck the impurities out of their bloodstream. There is no medical evidence to suggest that people can be “born in the wrong body,” much less that such a phenomenon can be cured with hormones and surgery. For us to be teaching this ideology to kids – and then allowing them to “transition” AS kids – speaks to how far from the path of reason we’ve fallen.
“They’re going to be in the hands of doctors for the rest of their lives,” McHugh lamented. “Many of them are going to be sterilized, not able to have their own children, and many will regret this.”
