In this, his continued war against Joe Biden’s failed immigration policies, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has sent a busload of migrants to Chicago, as he has similarly to New York and to Biden’s own doorstep in Washington, DC.
As the busloads of immigrants arrive in Chicago and other blue-run so-called “sanctuary cities,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot lashed out at Abbott’s migrant busing campaign, calling the move “racist.”
Lightfoot made the heated remarks as the first 75 migrants arrived on two buses from the Lone Star State. But the lefty lawmaker failed to mention President Biden’s immigration policies are largely to blame for the surge at the southern border, which has forced Abbott to take such actions.
Despite her vitriol leveled at Abbott, Lightfoot’s office claims to welcome the migrants with open arms.
“Chicago is a welcoming city and as such has collaborated across various departments and agencies to ensure we greeted them with dignity and respect,” Lightfoot’s office said.
“As a city, we are doing everything we can to ensure these immigrants and their families can receive shelter, food, and most importantly, protection,” she said, claiming that “many are fleeing violent, traumatic, or otherwise unstable environments.”
And yet, regardless of the façade of their welcoming message, Lightfoot’s office ripped Abbott, who has already been busing thousands of border-crossers to Washington, DC, and the Big Apple in protest at the Lone Star State being overwhelmed under Biden’s lax border policies.
“Unfortunately, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is without any shame or humanity,” the statement said.
“But ever since he put these racist practices of expulsion in place, we have been working with our community partners to ready the city to receive these individuals.”
The statement continued to play the race card, saying, “We know that racism, discrimination, and human cruelty have played a pivotal role in how immigrants are received within our borders, and we are still working to recover from the previous presidential administration, which encouraged this behavior.”
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker also insisted that “Illinois welcomes refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants.”
“My great-grandfather came to this country as an immigrant fleeing Ukraine in 1881. Immigrants just like my family seeking freedom and opportunity built this country,” he tweeted Wednesday night.
“Illinois is and has always been a welcoming state.”
Abbott has already spent more than $12 million busing immigrants to the key Democratic cities in a protest largely aimed at trying to force Biden to toughen up his border policies.
“President Biden’s inaction at our southern border continues putting the lives of Texans — and Americans — at risk and is overwhelming our communities,” Abbott said Wednesday as he confirmed Chicago was its latest sanctuary-city target.
“Mayor Lightfoot loves to tout the responsibility of her city to welcome all regardless of legal status, and I look forward to seeing this responsibility in action as these migrants receive resources from a sanctuary city with the capacity to serve them.”
