Anthony Kennedy Retires (and Celebrities Freak the Hell Out)

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, in a long-anticipated decision, announced his retirement on Wednesday, setting off what it sure to be a fierce but futile effort among Democrats to stop President Trump from getting another conservative on the nation’s highest bench.

Technically speaking, replacing Kennedy with another conservative would keep the Supreme Court’s political division the same as it is today; pragmatically, however, this has the potential to reshape the Court for decades. Kennedy was a Reagan nominee who aligned with the conservatives more often than not, but his track record is hardly spotless. Straying from both the Constitution and any sound legal basis on more than a few occasions, Kennedy fancied himself (and ultimately became) the Court’s prized “swing vote,” siding with the liberals on everything from abortion to gay marriage. Put another way: Virtually any Trump pick to replace him will be much more likely to base their decisions on sound constitutional ground.

Democrats – particularly those out in Hollywood – are freaking the hell out.

“SUPREME COURT NOW COMPLETELY RIGHT WING,” wrote legal scholar Cher. “TRUMP’S SUPREME COURT WILL TAKE AWAY OUR RIGHTS!! ROE V. WADE, GAY RIGHTS, TOO MANY TO LIST‼️ THIS BLOW COULDN’T BE MORE SEVERE‼️IF WE DONT FIGHT LIKE OUR LIVES DEPEND ON IT, ‘SOME AMERICANS’ COULD FIND ‘THEMSELVES’ IN INTERNMENT CAMPS.”

Well, at least they’re not blowing it out of proportion or anything.

“OK, Dems, this is real,” tweeted Don Cheadle. “All y’all paying attention? This is how you lose a country. All of our rights are in the balance. Urge your leadership to resist when trump attempts to appoint the next swamp thing out of the pez dispenser or kiss it bye bye.”

…the Pez dispenser?

“The illegitimate POTUS will now try to ram a SCOTUS nominee through before Nov,” warned Rob Reiner. “So much for that McConnell rule. Calling on two principled Republicans to stand up against tyranny.”

Oh, don’t worry, Mr. Reiner; we are confident that all 51 Republicans in the Senate will stand up against tyranny when they vote on a Supreme Court justice in the manner prescribed by the U.S. Constitution. Can’t say the same for what Democrats will be up to.

“Will and Grace” actress Debra Messing also went the Reiner route in hopes that they could swing a couple of Republicans their way. “We MUST appeal to exiting GOP Senator McCain and Senator Flake and ask them to be heroes,” she wrote. “Ask them to switch parties so we can hold off the vote.”

Like, we wouldn’t really be shocked if McCain and/or Flake did something that traitorous, but Messing probably shouldn’t hold her breath.

“Okay yes I love the Handmaids Tale – that doesn’t mean I want to live in it,” tweeted comedian Whitney Cummings – one of several lefties to make the reference.

Ah, we suppose you can’t really blame them for being distraught. All their #Resistance efforts have come to absolutely nothing, and they’re coming face to face with the reality that is Trump’s America: A place of winning, a place of law and order, a place of cultural sanity, and a place of economic opportunities for all who want to work for them. A place so different from the America they were on their way to getting with Obama/Hillary that they literally don’t know what to do with themselves. Sad!
