We’ll be honest: We didn’t really have Oakland, California in our list of top twenty cities we’d like to move to even before the last month or so…but it has dropped completely out of the rankings of places we’d even like to visit.
First, there was the ridiculous and probably illegal decision on the part of Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf to inform her city’s illegal immigrants that ICE was planning a Bay Area raid in the coming days. This, according to several officials in the Trump administration, may have allowed as many as 800 criminally dangerous immigrants to escape detection and remain at large. It may have also precipitated the Department of Justice’s lawsuit against the State of California, where the federal government is challenging the recently-passed sanctuary laws.
Now there’s Hasta Muerte Coffee Shop, proving that ICE is not the only law enforcement agency that Oakland citizens despise.
Er, did we say “citizens?”
On February 16, the worker-owned establishment turned away a uniformed police officer. Now they are loudly and proudly defending their decision to keep police out of the shop for the “physical and emotional safety” of their customers.
From KCRA in Oakland:
Coffee shop workers did not respond to requests for comment on the policy, but a post on their Instagram account showed a photo with writing in Spanish that says, “Talk to your neighbors, not the police.”
Below the pictures, the post goes on to say:
“OPDs recent attempts to enlist officers of color and its short term touting of fewer officer involved shootings does not reverse or mend its history of corruption, mismanagement, and scandal, nor a legacy of blatant repression. The facts are that poc (people of color), women, and queer police are complicit in upholding the same law and order that routinely criminalizes and terrorizes black and brown and poor folks, especially youth, trans, and houseless folks. For these reasons and so many more, we need the support of the actual community to keep this place safe, not police. “
Which of course shows you that there is no such thing as a “good cop” to these socialists. A black or Latino man who wears a police uniform is given as much respect as a person of color who happens to identify as a conservative. Which is to say: None. For these radicals, every individual wearing a badge is a state thug, looking to make things worse for minorities…who of course cannot help but commit crime, seeing as how “repressed” they are.
We’re quite sure, though, that the moment this coffee shop is robbed, they will be on the phone to 911.
Even if the robber was a transgender, homeless, illegal immigrant.
