Democrat Chides Colleagues For Not Calling Impeachment Witnesses of Color

No one in the Democratic Party has been calling for President Trump’s impeachment longer than Rep. Al Green (D-TX). You’d think that he would be over the moon that the party is finally going along with a scheme he’s been preaching from the earliest days of 2017. Instead, the African-American Democrat is upset that the House Judiciary Committee forgot to invite “people of color” to testify against Trump in their hearing on Wednesday.

Prior to the committee hearing, which involved Democrats and Republicans asking law professors their thoughts on impeachment (for some reason), Green took to the House floor to lecture his colleagues about the importance of racial representation.

“I rise because I love my country, but I also rise today with heartfelt regrets. It hurts my heart, Mr. Speaker, to see the Judiciary Committee hearing experts on the topic of impeachment — one of the seminal issues of this Congress — hearing experts… and not one person of color among the experts,” Green said.

“What subliminal message are we sending to the world when we have experts but not one person of color?” he continued. “Are we saying that there are no people of color who are experts on this topic of impeachment? I refuse to be ignored and taken for granted. I came here to represent the people who are ignored and taken for granted. Not one person of color among the constitutional scholars. It seems that there’s a desire among some to have the output of people of color without input from the people of color.

“I rise today to say that this is not about Democrats. It’s not about Republicans. It’s about fairness,” Green concluded. “It’s about whether or not we have matured to the point in this country where we’re going to treat all people equally.”

Well, we’re not really sure what to say about this. On the one hand, Green certainly makes a point when it comes to the Democratic Party’s willingness to take black votes for granted; polls showing Trump’s support rising among African-Americans are the consequence of this.

On the other hand…this is just about the silliest piece of identity politics we’ve seen in a while.

Well, other than people blaming racism for sinking Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign.

Oh, and people claiming that the Peloton commercial is sexist.

Or wait, maybe it was gay activists bashing Pete Buttigieg for helping the Salvation Army.

You know what, never mind. Turns out that Rep. Green is right there in the liberal mainstream. Our mistake.
