Every Republican on Intel Committee Calls on Adam Schiff to Resign

It’s not every day that a House chairman loses the confidence of every member of the opposing party. As far as we remember, not even Adam Schiff’s polarizing predecessor Devin Nunes ever had to face down a letter from every single one of the Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee demanding his resignation. Then again, Nunes didn’t look straight into the evidence before covering his eyes, plugging his ears, and vowing to keep running with a hoax theory that had already been disproven.

That’s what Schiff is doing as he runs around insisting to anyone who will listen that it doesn’t really matter whether or not Robert Mueller concluded that President Trump is innocent of colluding with Russia. It doesn’t really matter if he could not recommend that the president be charged with obstruction of justice. None of it matters. The only thing that matters is that Adam Schiff has a rocketship to the top of the Democratic Party waiting for him, and he’s not going to let anything so inconvenient as a fact keep him from catching his ride.

On Thursday, the nine Republicans on the committee had seen enough. They signed a letter demanding that Schiff resign his post, and Rep. Mike Conaway read the letter to the chairman at the outset of a public hearing.

You have, Conaway charged, “abused your position to knowingly promote false information.”

“Your actions both past and present are incompatible with your duty as chairman,” Conaway continued. “We have no faith in your ability to discharge duties.”

Nunes himself concurred. “We should not be used as a platform to spread false information and bizarre conspiracies,” he said.

Another member of the committee – Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH) – said that Schiff’s refusal to believe the Mueller report’s conclusions was reminiscent of the Red Scare of the 1950s.

“With McCarthyism, we had Russia chasing after Russian communists,” he said. “Now we have Schiff chasing after Russian collusion and those who would collude.”

But Schiff still has the support of the Democratic Party leadership. On Thursday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that all the animus towards Schiff was proof that the Trump administration was trying to hide something.

“So what is the President afraid of?” Pelosi asked. “Is he afraid of the truth? That he would go after a member, a chairman of a committee, a respected chairman of a committee in the Congress. I think they’re just scaredy-cats, they just don’t know what to do, so they have to make an attack. They did the wrong thing.”

This is the same woman, mind you, who was screaming “Why aren’t we talking about something else?” when Republicans were investigating Benghazi in 2014.

You don’t have to be “afraid of the truth” to criticize an investigation. Not after several investigations have already taken place. Not after Robert Mueller – the man the Democrats assured us was THE gold standard in law enforcement – has submitted his final conclusions. You just need to have a desire for the country to move on. You just need a desire for someone other than a conspiracy theorist to be in charge of the House Intelligence Committee.

Resign, Mr. Schiff.
