Report: Robert Mueller Lied to Congress Under Oath

According to a new report from Judicial Watch, former special counsel Robert Mueller flat-out lied to Congress this year when he testified under oath. The government watchdogs uncovered information on Tuesday that suggests that Mueller was untruthful when he told lawmakers that he was not going after the job of FBI Director when he met with Trump in 2017. Administration officials privy to the meeting say that’s not accurate – that Mueller was indeed seeking to replace James Comey and get his old job back at the Bureau.

From Fox News:

Multiple administration officials tell Fox News that when Robert Mueller met with President Trump in May of 2017, Mueller was indeed pursuing the open post as the director of the FBI – something the former Russia probe special counsel denied under oath during congressional testimony this summer.

These officials also told Fox News government documents showed Mueller was pursuing the job as a candidate himself.

It came as emails released this month through a Freedom of Information Act request by the conservative group Judicial Watch seemed to indicate Mueller knew there was a real possibility he could be named special counsel if he wasn’t chosen as the next FBI director.

“The boss and his staff do not know about our discussions,” then-Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said in an email to Mueller on May 12, 2017. Rosenstein’s boss was then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who had recused himself from the Russia probe, meaning the president would not have known either.

Under oath in July, Mueller told Congress that he met with the president solely to lend him advice on how to proceed.

“My understanding,” he testified, “was I was not applying for the job. I was asked to give my input on what it would take to do the job.”

One day after Mueller met with Trump, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein officially named him the special counsel in charge of investigating Russia’s 2016 interference. This strange timing has always drawn scrutiny. How is it that a guy applies for the position of FBI Director under the president one day, and then accepts a position investigating said president the next? Something is fishy, and the texts Judicial Watch uncovered show why. Mueller (as was already obvious) knew he was going to take the special counsel’s job by the time he met with Trump.

That makes the meeting a set-up of some kind; an opportunity for Mueller to get into the Oval Office under false pretenses, just to see what he could shake out of the tree. And depending on what Trump discussed with him that day, it could have easily invalidated Mueller’s entire appointment.

Perhaps this doesn’t matter as much now – Democrats seem eager to move beyond Mueller and his report at this point – but it does show you how crooked this investigation was from the get-go.

Not that we ever thought otherwise.
