Republican Lawmaker Says Trump Meets “Threshold of Impeachment”

In a Twitter post on Friday, Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) became the first Republican lawmaker to say publicly that President Donald Trump should be subject to impeachment. While not necessarily going so far as to call for those proceedings to begin, Amash did say that Trump’s behavior rises to the level necessary to impeach.

“Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meets the threshold for impeachment,” Amash wrote, instantly making himself the new Flavor of the Month for a mainstream media that loves Republicans who go against Trump. “President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.”

“In fact,” Amash continued, “Mueller’s report identifies multiple examples of conduct satisfying all the elements of obstruction of justice, and undoubtedly any person who is not the president of the United States would be indicted based on such evidence.”

And so Amash set in motion a very predictable wheel of events. No, not the impeachment of Donald Trump. Rather, the ousting of Justin Amash. No doubt, it will not be long before he joins the ranks of Bob Corker, Jeff Flake, Evan McMullin, Bill Kristol, and other NeverTrump politicians and pundits who have successfully tanked their own careers in their zeal to hate this president. As a matter of fact, Amash’s comments were barely cold by the time a Michigan conservative hinted that he would run against Amash in the next election.

“This cannot go unchallenged!” insisted Michigan State Rep. Jim Lower. “I support @realDonaldTrump, I support West Michigan values, I support our party’s values and I will have a major announcement regarding MI CD3 this week!”

Hopefully Lower will be successful in his bid. We don’t need every Republican to think, speak, and act in lockstep with President Trump. That’s not good for anyone. But there’s a difference between measured political disagreement and this kind of nonsense. Anyone who thinks Mueller found anything even approaching “high crimes and misdemeanors” is drinking the wrong kind of Kool-Aid. At this point, it’s not even about keeping Congress clean of NeverTrump ideology; it’s about electing Republicans who aren’t stupid enough to fall for the media’s propaganda. It’s clear that Amash is not among them.
